Pomona Hope Kids After School Program
2009-10
The average student increased an average of 13% in English Language Arts and 6% in Math.
The most marked overall improvement was 1st and 2nd grade Language arts, with a 40% improvement.
One student increased 70% in English Language Arts and 40% in Math!
Of 27 students sharing report cards:
- 66% of students improved in Writing
- 59% improved in Reading Level
- 59% improved in Listening/Speaking
- 57% improved in Health
- 48% improved in Math
- 45% improved in History
- 41% improved in Science
2008-09
In 2008-09, the average student increased an average of 26% in English Language Arts and 27% in Math.
Of 14 students sharing report cards:
- 79% improved in Math
- 71% improved in Reading Level
- 57% improved in Writing
- 50% improved in Listening/Speaking
Detailed Results for After School Program, 2008-2010
Community Organizing in Partnership with OneLA and First Presbyterian Church of Pomona
- More than 1 million was added to the city budget to address a lack of street lights and sidewalks in neighborhoods in Pomona
- A hot-spot for drug and prostitution network next to the Pomona Hope Community Center was shut down with neighbors help
- Air-conditioning was added to a Pomona elementary school through working with the school, city and residents to pass a proposition for additional funds
- Car impoundment for driving without a license at check-points was lessened from an original cost and length of $100 a day for 30 days to 24 hours, limiting a significant financial burden for local workers who were first time offenders
- A system for allowing parents to volunteer their children’s school was made significantly easier
- School lunches were made substantially more healthy with the addition of a salad bar at one local school
These victories were all won with the energy of local residents, and we look forward to more to come.
Community Garden in Partnership with Pomona First Presbyterian Church of Pomona
- Crime has decreased in the immediate neighborhood by 40%
- One family saved $100 on groceries from being able to grow fresh vegtables themselves
- A once ugly lot across the street from the Pomona Hope Community Center has been beautified, creating a sense of hope
Parent Classes in Partnership with San Gabriel’s Asian Youth Center
- Parents have had a place to share frustrations in parenting and learn valuable skills
- There have been more than a dozen parents at each class in the last year
